2010 Lotus Esprit Preview
Lotus is currently working on a replacement for the Esprit sports car built from 1976 to 2004. The initial release date was 2008, but current assumptions within the company imply that the actual release date will be December 2009. The 2010 Esprit will be priced at $130.000 (est) and will compete with models like Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8 and Porsche Turbo.
One of the three models from Lotus due in the next few years, it will be built at the Lotus headquarters at Hethel in Norfolk U.K. The 2010 Esprit it is supposed to be the first
Lotus to employ the “versatile vehicle architecture” aluminum construction technique that will allow other models to spawn from the Esprit’s bones. By 2010, Ogaard-Nielsen wants Hethel to sell 10,000 cars a year, over three model lines: Elise/Europa, Esprit, and a third sports car. Executives are considering a 2+2 positioned between the Elise and Esprit, possibly with a front-mounted engine.
The original Esprit survived for 28 years, before production enede in February 2004. But you can not expect that the new Lotus to airbrush the first genearion Esprit out of the history. It will capture the spirit of the original model, and according to Lotus Cars managing director Clive Dopson "It’s an evolution of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 1972 icon rather than a carbon copy, although it retains ’quite a lot of the wedge shape."
The car is known internally as MSC, the acronym for mid-engined supercar. Lotus believes that the new Esprit is crucial for their future and promise that the new model to be “a stunning, exhilarating car with high performance and vehicle dynamics superior to any other.”
The new Esprit will be built around a new aluminium structure, which Lotus plans to adopt for other cars, too. The exterior design has been signed off; the aerodynamics are being scrutinised in the wind tunnel. At launch, the Esprit won’t have a prominent wing, although higher performance models will, like the 1989 SE.
Under the bonet you will see BMW’s 4.8-liter V8 mid-engine, with an output of 400 hp. The top speed will go up to 200 mph. The mid –engine coupe may use also the V8 engine from the
Audi RS4, offering 430hp, more than enough for a light-weight sport car.The Esprit will use advanced materials like aluminium and carbon fibre to provide a total mass of around 2645 lbs.
The Esprit will go on sale in 2010 and will be offered in both coupe and convertible version.
2010 Lotus Evora
Lotus today revealed the 2010 Evora at the British Motor Show. It will be hand crafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus’s advanced manufacturing facility at Hethel in the east of England; capacity limitations will restrict production to approximately 2000 cars a year, ensuring the dynamic new sports car’s rarity and exclusivity.
Evora is powered by Toyota’s all-alloy 2GR-FE 3.5-litre V6 DOHC, with dual VVT-i (‘intelligent’ variable valve timing). The engine delivers 280 PS at 6400 rpm, while boosting its maximum torque to 342 Nm at 4700 rpm (prototype figures). The 2GR-FE V6 engine is mated to a manual six-speed gearbox, again Toyota-sourced. A close-ratio version of this gearbox is also currently under development for the even more sport-focussed driver. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is made in less than 5 seconds.
Designed ‘in-house’ by Lotus Design, the sleek and athletic form uses fluid forms and crisp surfaces to communicate velocity, agility and sophistication. Low and wide with modern cab forward proportions, muscular rear haunches and function optimised hip air intakes this is clearly a serious mid engined sportscar that skilfully hides the practicality of its two plus two capability.
2010 Lotus Exige S
The 2010MY Exige S made its world debut today at the Geneva Motor Show. The sportscar comes with a newly designed front end, a new rear wing and improved fuel economy.
The Exige S is being offered in a choice of three different packs: Touring, Sport and Performance. For the last one the power is raised to 239 hp at 8000 rpm courtesy of a Magnuson/Eaton M62 supercharger, new faster flowing injectors and higher torque clutch system and an upsized roof scoop to feed more air to the supercharger intercooler system.
The Exige S makes the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 4.77 secs, but in the same time has a fuel economy of 33.2 mpg.
2010 Lotus Evora 2+2
Lotus revealed the Evora sports car last year at the British Motor Show. Today in Geneva it added a new version to the line-up: the 2+2 version.
The Evora 2+2 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 hp; add that to a weight of only 1350 kg and you will get a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds, while top speed goes up to 161 mph.
With the Evora 2+2, Lotus becomes the only maker in the world that has a production midengined 2+2.
Lotus will start Evora deliveries in May and prices for Germany for the 2+2 version starts at 63.500 euro (or $80,000 at the current rates).
2009 Lotus Eagle
The future Lotus Eagle will make its world debut in July at the London Motor Show, after many and many rumors and spy shots. The new 2+2 sports car will go on sale towards the end of the year at a price of $90.000. Lotus announced a convertible version is also in the works and will be launched few months after the coupe.
The 2009 Eagle will be placed between the Elise and
next-generation Esprit, and is designed for those who love the Elise, but also want a little more room and comfort.
The 2009 Eagle will be powered by a tuned version of Toyota’s V6 engine used in the Camry. It will be offered with two different displacements: 2.5 liters and 3.0 liters with power between 200 and 300 hp. The Eagle was announced to be a real sports car with 0 to 60 mp sprint to be made in less than 5 seconds.
2009 Lotus Exige Cup 260
Lotus unveiled details on the 2009 Exige Cup 260. For 2009 the sports car is offered with advanced light weight components and carbon fiber body material, to reduce the overall weight by 38 kg (84 lbs) to a total mass less than 900 kg (1980 lbs).
The supercharged and intercooled engine in the Exige Cup 260 has a maximum power output of 257 hp at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of 174 lbft at 6000 rpm. This means each pony in the car only has to carry around about 7.5 pound.
Lotus reduced the weight by adding new carbon-fiber panels, including the roof panel, dash top, tailgate, front and rear spoilers, seats and the side intake ducts. Also lightweight materials are used in the flywheel, rear subframe, battery and supercharger pipes, and the rear window glass has been replaced by a lightweight composite.
The 2009 Exige Cup 260 is street legal in Europe and Asia and is on sale now.
