The tC sports coupe, the best-selling vehicle in the Scion lineup, carries over unchanged for the 2009 model year after receiving minor changes last year. The tC Spec Package is discontinued for 2009. The tC remains one of the best values in its segment and has EPA fuel economy estimates of 20 city/27 highway for the manual transmission and 21/29 for the automatic. In addition, the tC is rated ULEV.

The tC features a five-speed manual transmission or an available electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The tC features a 106.3-inch wheelbase and 69.1-inch wide stance which facilitates roominess and ride comfort. Four-wheel independent suspension, strut-type front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension add responsive handling.Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) are standard on the tC. A two-step brake booster increases power assist in proportion to pedal force to provide precise pedal feel. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) helps to prevent the wheels from locking during severe braking maneuvers, while EBD monitors differences in front- and rear-wheel speeds and distributes optimal braking force to all four wheels.
Like all Scions, the tC comes standard with front dual stage airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor system, headrests, three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions and a first aid kit. The tC also features a driver’s knee airbag.
Audio System Choices
Scion’s standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system features a head unit with iPod connectivity and control. This head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit’s screen. Connectivity is achieved by simply plugging the iPod into a port via a connector cable, providing outstanding sound quality through the car’s stereo system and constant power to the iPod. Music is controlled through the head unit and steering wheel audio controls. A standard mini-jack port also allows users to listen to their portable music collection through the tC’s Pioneer speakers. The tC’s optional Pioneer premium audio system adds several more features to the standard head unit including the ability to download "skins" to play on the organic electroluminescent (OEL) faceplate. Customers can download images, four-second video clips and eight-second movies from Pioneer’s website. In addition, Pioneer software allows customers to personalize their head unit by burning their own images and movies onto a CD and uploading them onto the available head unit.Since many Scion customers add in-car entertainment systems to their vehicle, the optional premium audio system comes with head unit outputs in the rear allowing for the addition of external amps to boost power to additional speakers and subwoofers. All head unit features remain unchanged if this feature is used. Both the standard and premium head units retain key Scion audio system features such as Scion Sound Processing (SSP) where listeners can choose from three pre-set equalizer settings, satellite radio compatibility, a user-customizable welcome screen, MP3 and WMA capability, Automatic Sound Leveling (ASL) and Sound Retouch Technology (SRT), which provides clearer CD sound quality. Both systems will also feature seven speakers: a tweeter and woofer in each door panel, two full range speakers in the rear and the subwoofer under the cargo area.Scion navigation system is also available featuring a 160-watt maximum power audio/video/navigation unit with seven-inch LCD touch screen.
Comfort and Class
The tC features unexpected utility, detail and content for its class. The comfortable front sport bucket seats feature driver’s side height and thigh support adjustments, along with a walk-in function with memory for both the seat and backrest. For easy access to the rear seats a wide step-in space is available at the push of a convenient lever at the top of the seat back. The center console’s waterfall design is complemented by shutter-type flush-closing dash vents. In addition, a genuine cast-aluminum temperature control dial flanked by soft-touch electronic buttons, and an LCD display showing exterior temperature, seven fan speeds and a clock are features of the metal-tone center console. The interior is also accented by a deep orange combination meter on the instrument panel, and silver-colored accents on the door assist grips and center cluster.Details of the interior were not overlooked as the dash and upper door panels are covered with unique trim that was inspired by the texture of Japanese paper. In addition, the front-passenger airbag is seamlessly integrated into the dash. Dampers are used for the interior moving parts and ensure smooth operation. With the extensive use of sound absorption materials the tC maintains low NVH levels. The tC’s rear seats deliver utility and comfort. The rear can recline to 45 degrees and can be adjusted into 10 different positions. The 60/40-split rear seats fold forward for a nearly flat cargo floor, and when both are folded flat provide more than 8.5 feet of length for cargo. Standard tie down hooks in the rear seat and cargo areas provide added convenience.Storage is abundant in the tC with four roomy map pockets, bag hooks in side panels, numerous CD, bottle, cup and cell phone holders, and a two-tiered fabric-covered center console.
Generous Standard Features
All Scion models come well-equipped in a "mono spec" trim. The tC offers full standard equipment so the customer only needs to choose between manual or automatic transmissions and vehicle color.Standard features include the panorama glass power moonroof (a first in this segment), air conditioning, cruise control, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal lights, power door locks and mirrors, rear cargo tonneau cover, auto up/down power windows with jam protection, in-key remote keyless entry, rolling-code engine immobilizer security system, auto-off headlamps, electronic hatch release, chrome-plated exhaust tip and a unique audio unit cover. All Scion models come with complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services for the first 5,000 mile and 10,000 mile intervals, to be performed by an authorized Scion or Toyota dealership. The tC model is available in a choice of seven colors: Flint Mica, Super White, Black Sand Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Sizzling Crimson Mica, Wave Line Pearl and Nautical Blue Metallic. Scion’s iQ concept is the intelligent answer to this need for highly emotional and efficient urban transportation. The convenience of having work, entertainment and culture nearby for young city-dwellers is a significant draw to urban centers. The vehicle must be able to navigate narrow, congested streets, park in tight places, have impressive fuel economy, and have compelling design and function.“Scion’s iQ concept turns traditional auto design upside down,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “Traditionally small vehicles have been thought of as being basic. The iQ concept is just the opposite with its innovative features and iconic urban design, and we believe it fits in well within the Scion brand. Our young, trendsetting buyers are creative and innovative forward thinkers, and we think they will appreciate what iQ has to offer.”The production iQ is currently sold in Japan and Europe. Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif. took the iQ to the next level with aggressive exterior and interior modifications that show the vehicle’s potential for personalization. With its 78.7-inch wheelbase, the three-door hatchback can deftly maneuver through city traffic. At the same time, its overall length of 126.9-inches, overall width of 71.4-inches, and short front and rear overhangs allow the iQ to fit in virtually any city parking space. The front-mounted differential and repositioned steering rack decrease front end length. In addition, the iQ is equipped with a flat gas tank housed beneath the floor that reduces rear overhang.
Pushing the wheels of the small, bold concept towards the four corners of the body gives the iQ a confident stance. The custom 18-inch wheels with a nickel finish and wide tires fill the wheel well, adding to its surefootedness. The iQ’s custom front air dam, aero headlamps and high-intensity LED driving lamps signal urban road readiness.“We believe the Scion iQ micro-subcompact concept is the future of transportation,” said Hollis. “If it should join our future line-up, I think it could reach iconic status like our xB. Its styling will attract attention and if it’s a Scion, you know it’ll be easy to personalize.”The iQ’s profile is defined by a strong and high beltline. Smooth lines glide from the large, dark finish headlamps, up the A-pillar, across the roof and wrap around the rear emphasizing the concept’s geometric beauty. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the clean design. The rear emphasizes the vehicle’s modern style. Trapezoidal lines run toward the wheels, from the hatch to the thick rear diffuser, creating a substantial presence. A center-mounted trapezoid exhaust adds to the vehicle’s distinctiveness, while large, matte-finished rear taillights help keep the vehicle visible.

The Japanese automotive manufacturer Scion has just revealed plans for their final limited edition vehicle for the 2009 model year. The Scion xD Release Series 2.0 will go on sale later this month and carry a $1,270 premium over a base xD, which go for $14,650 when equipped with a manual transmission and $15,450 for one that will shift itself.
Like any limited edition offering from an automaker, the Scion xD Release Series 2.0 will be manufactured in limited numbers. In this vehicle’s case there will only be 1600 units produced. Is this the kind of factory custom ride that today’s young new car shoppers are looking for? We will just have to wait and see, but as is the case with any special edition Scion, every example should find a home very shortly.

"No one in the automotive industry is as hard-wire-connected to its owners as is Scion, and the 2008 xB is a perfect example," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "We’ve stated in the past that we’ll probably always have a box in the Scion lineup, but our owners told us they wanted a bigger box. They talk, we listen and we responded with a bigger and better xB."
Distinct Scion StyleLike the previous generation xB, the all-new 2008 model was styled with distinctiveness in mind. This aggressive new compact applies design elements from the t2B concept vehicle that was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. These exterior styling cues include the soft angles between its wide and flat paneling, high beltline, elongated headlamps that wrap around the side of the vehicle, inset taillights, rectangular grille, pronounced fenders, and single rear backup light on the left bumper. The xB also features tinted rear windows, and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors.
Larger Chassis for a Smooth RideScion customers love to drive, so with that in mind, the overall size was enlarged, helping to create a more exciting driving experience. Engineers increased the wheelbase by four inches, the overall length by a foot, the overall width by almost three inches and decreased overall height more than an inch to give the xB a more comfortable ride.
The xB also receives 16-inch steel wheels, an inch larger than the previous generation. Customers will be able to choose from three all-new standard wheel covers which, will also be shared with the all-new xD. The xB also stops with larger brakes thanks to the 10.83-inch ventilated discs in the front and 10.98-inch disc brakes in the rear which are more than two inches bigger than the previous generation.Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle at a press conference today at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. Scion unveiled today at the New York Auto Show the Hako Coupe, a concept developed by Tokyo Design Division. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.
Tokyo Design developed the Hako Coupe with classic American coupes in mind. The car’s geometric profile conveys a powerful stance in a compact and bold package. Its trapezoidal LED headlights lie parallel with a large and aggressive, rectangular upper grille. The lower rectangular grille anchors the front fascia and continues to communicate the Hako’s aggressive attitude. Round fog lights, symmetrically placed high on the front bumper, have integrated turn signals.
The Hako Coupe features a vertical windshield as the concept sits upright and ready to attack the road. A high linear beltline along with a blackened and chopped greenhouse seamlessly wrap around the rear to provide a mysterious profile. As an example of potential personalization, the concept is equipped with a flat, panorama roof that features a random, barcode-like pattern that can be seen on the exterior and from the interior.
Inside, the Hako is accented with orange and metallic detailing that exudes a modern environment with entertainment possibilities. The front and rear seats are covered with urethane and rubber-like upholstery for easy cleaning. The contemporary front bucket seats flow to the floor and incorporate a geometric design on the seatback. The seats are separated by a center console that features a large storage crevice for storing magazines, cell phones, and other small items. Two cockpit-like rear seats also share a storage crevice.
Press release
Scion unveiled its Hako Coupe Concept vehicle at a press conference today at the New York International Auto Show. Scion’s Hako Coupe was developed by Tokyo Design Division, which studied global, youth-inspired trends. Japanese and American youth cultures often influence each other and are interpreted with a unique twist. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters. "Scion’s Hako Coupe Concept embodies a distinct global perspective on today’s youth," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "This type of forward thinking complements the Scion philosophy of intently listening to our customers and being willing to take risks to help us see where our brand should be. We took the xB’s iconic boxy shape and explored something more vivacious, yet just as emotionally appealing. This concept is the sporty version of a box." Scion unveiled the RS*R tC, a Formula Drift model based on the most popular model, the tC sports coupe. The RS*R Scion tC features a 3SGE Beams motor, HKS GT3037 turbo and intercooler, Blitz Dual SBC boost controller, and AEM EMS engine management system that outputs more than 400 hp, compared to the stock 161 hp.
A G-Force five-speed sequential transmission, Tilton triple carbon clutch, Project Mu brakes, RS-R coilovers, Sparco Corsa seats and a custom concept wide body kit also make this vehicle unique. This tC will gracefully maneuver the track with Enkei RPF1 wheels and Toyo Proxes R1R™ tires.
The RS*R Scion tC, also sponsored by Toyo Tires and XM Satellite Radio, will make its first appearance at Formula Drift’s Round 1, Streets of Long Beach in Calif. on April 12. The event will also be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Scion today announced it will drift the RS*R Scion tC in Formula Drift events this year.Scion’s drift car is based on its most popular model, the tC sports coupe. The factory built front-wheel drive tC turned into a drifting contender through a rear-wheel drive conversion performed by acclaimed exhaust and suspension manufacturer, RS*R. The tC shares its platform with Toyota’s Japanese market Avensis four-wheel drive and Caldina all-wheel drive, enabling it to undergo the conversion. RS*R used its extensive performance shop experience to change the tC’s stock transverse engine configuration to a longitudinal setup in order to drive power, through the transmission and drive shaft, directly to the rear wheels."Scion has participated in motorsports for three years and the fan support has been incredible," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "Drifting is an exciting, emerging motorsport with a dedicated and intense fan base. We’re looking to engage drifting enthusiasts and Scion owners just like we do in drag racing. We think the fans will be just as excited as we are about our RS*R Scion tC as it demonstrates one of Scion’s primary philosophies, customization. At this time we do not have confirmed plans to produce a tC rear wheel drive, but a lot of people will want to take one home."The RS*R Scion tC features a 3SGE Beams motor, HKS GT3037 turbo and intercooler, Blitz Dual SBC boost controller, and AEM EMS engine management system that outputs more than 400 horsepower, compared to the stock 161 horsepower. A G-Force five-speed sequential transmission, Tilton triple carbon clutch, Project Mu brakes, RS-R coilovers, Sparco Corsa seats and a custom concept wide body kit also make this vehicle unique. This tC will gracefully maneuver the track with Enkei RPF1 wheels and Toyo Proxes® R1R™ tires.

The xB received a facelift in its 2008 model. It was completely redesigned to fit the American market with its square soap box now a little wider (3”), longer (1”) and as any good American product, 600lbs heavier! To keep up with its extra weight, the engine received an additional 48hp and upgraded from its 1.5L to a 2.3L (taken from the 4 cylinder Toyota Camry).
The Price starts at $16,600. Not bad for a car offering all the security features that mom and dad will want their kid to have, such as 6 airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, traction control and side impact door beams.
The exterior looks better than ever. Even without any options it looks very stylish with LED lights integrated in the side mirrors, chrome exhaust tip, a single rear tail light and the bulkiest form you can see on the road today. With its high profile door line, the xB has the same kind of ‘chop top’ and the almost vertical windshield that made the Hummer H2 a success.
The first time you get inside the xB, you will need a couple of hours to adjust to the space and the controls. The windshield is mounted very far from the driver and the instrumentation cluster is aligned with the central console. This brings a whole new meaning to the word spacious. There is so much space between the steering wheel and the windshield that I could open my full size laptop on top of the dashboard.
The steering wheel is made of cheap quality plastic, but at least it offers 5 buttons to control the stereo. The system not only it accepts mp3 disks and offers an input jack, it also comes with a dedicated plug for your iPod. As soon as your favorite player is plugged in, you will see the Scion logo appear on your iPod screen. How cool is that! You can also skip songs from the stereo and the steering wheel controls. The only problem is that the plug exposed and not in a storage bin as it should be. Should you forget to unplug your iPod, it will be laying down in the open, screaming for someone to break in. The seats are very comfortable and offer surprisingly good support. It is just too bad that the space between both seats was not filled with a decently sized size armrest. Instead, Scion is offering a razor thin armrest that is a better fit for anyone weighing less than 100 lbs.

Exterior:
The new xD is built on the Toyota Yaris’ platform. However, the design is vastly inspired by the best selling Scion xB, while featuring more conventional volumes, a wider slanted windshield and regular sized windows.
Although the front of the xD is small, it was designed in such a way that it gives an impression of spaciousness. The xD is a bit of a show off too. It has a large front bumper, accented with an extra wide grill and two over sized (fake) side air inlets, located under the aggressive headlights.
From the side, the xD presents a slanted windshield and high shoulder line, further pronounced by wide and flared fenders. The bottom part of the doors is also flared, giving an impression that the car has already been fitted with an after-market body kit. Thus, projecting a much sportier look than its engine can pretend to. While the Scion xD windows are large, larger than the almost chop top Scion xB, they still look small from the outside promoting a compact feel.
Towards the rear, the xD continues the mixed design between square angles and smooth curves. The rear window is vertical, accented with a body integrated spoiler that stretches into the C pillars. Vertical tail lamps duplicate the same protruding style as that found on the head lights. The bumper sticks out even further and is accentuated with two low mounted stop lights, and an oval-shaped chrome exhaust tip.
Overall, the exterior of the Scion xD is very playful, but borderline busy. The successful Scion xB style, with its sharp edges and boxy style, is giving birth to another cute compact car that will appeal to the young and design minded buyers.
Interior:
Inside the Scion xD, the first thing you notice is the extremely basic instrument cluster. It almost feels as if something is missing. The cluster is composed of three compartments, but only the center is equipped with a dial. The speedometer and the rev counter are fashionably integrated in this dial, showing off Scion’s skills in transforming a cost saving solution into stylish niceties. A digital gas gauge and odometer can be found respectively on the left and right of the main compartment. In front of the driver, the steering wheel, as in all other Scion models, includes embedded audio controls on the left branch and a dedicated cruise control arm on the right.
The center stack features a metallic black cover that sticks out from the console, bringing in another needed touch of refinement in the overall basic interior. This same painted cover accents the steering wheel, and all four door arm rests. Located on top of the center stack is the Scion Pioneer audio system, offering full Ipod connectivity and nice punch through for its six speakers/tweeters. Below the audio system there is a basic digital clock and the climate controls that are operated by three large knobs. The knobs are easy to reach and use.
The xD comes standard with two sound inputs located on the lower center stack. Allowing a media player to be plugged into the auxiliary port or an iPod to be plugged into a dedicated iPod port. Using the iPod port allows navigating through your music directly from the steering wheel or from the main deck buttons. Between the two sound inputs is a small compartment, which is great for placing your iPod, MP3 player, or even a cell phone. But to prevent theft or having to unplug and hide your device at each stop, it would be better if the connections were located in the glove box or another closed compartment.
The small Scion doesn’t offer any armrest, but the seats are comfortable. The cloth cover is pleasant to the eye and to the touch. Surprisingly, the rear seats slide and recline, offering larger cargo space or more comfort for backseat passengers. This slide and recline feature can be accessed while loading the trunk, thanks to a clever lever location on top of the seats. This is a small detail that makes a big difference in providing convenience and facilitating ease of use. Other details show Scion Engineers’ attention to the details, such as providing few small compartments, under the rug in the trunk. In this, Scion took advantage of any empty space around and in the middle of the spare tire, to provide storage for small items. In these bins, one can store an emergency kit or even little gps tracker (to see where the kids are).
Overall, the interior of the xD is true to the Scion brand. It looks basic at first, but after a few minutes inside the car, you will notice the smart design. The xD is a well thought out car, where all practicality and cost saving solutions have been taken over by designers, thus making the purchase of this entry vehicle not only a no-brainer, but possibly an impulse buy for car shopper on a budget.
Engine:
Under the hood, the xD is powered by a 1.8-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine, with Dual Variable Valve Timing. This engine delivers 128 horsepower, and pushes the 3,600 lb xD from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. Not enough to glue you to your seat, but the playful power plant will keep you entertained. The automatic transmission is quick as well, and adds some nice punch especially when you have to switch from drive to reverse multiple times. The best part about this engine is its MPG, rating at 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway with a manual transmission, and 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with an automatic transmission.
Test Drive:
Driving the Scion xD, summed up in one word, was FUN. The new Scion is light and responsive. The steering and suspensions definitely make the drive sporty. Although the engine is not the most powerful, the xD is still a joy to drive. This car will be a perfect fit for enthusiast drivers who don’t want to spend a fortune on their ride. Of course, the stiff suspension can make the ride bumpy at times.
The best thing about the xD is that you can have tons of fun, feeling like a rally car driver, but when you look at the speedometer you realize that you are not really going that fast. This ride is perfect for keeping parents happy and from staying out of trouble with our state’s finest.
